    A 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Mount Vernon, IL area during the evening hours of Sunday, December 17, 2023. The earthquake, which registered 3.1 on the Richter scale, shook communities around the Mount Vernon area around 10:10 PM CDT. Residents in Mount Vernon and surrounding communities reported minor shaking.

    Illinois is expected to experience a bout of intense rainfall from this evening through Friday morning. The current forecast indicates precipitation ranging between 1 to 1.5 inches by Friday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast anticipates rainfall in the range of 1.00 to 1.50 inches.
