Severe Weather Threat 3-14-24

Severe weather is possible during the morning and evening hours on Thursday, March 14, 2024. The Storm Prediction Center currently has much of Illinois under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms. The main threat looks to be damaging winds and large hail, with some of the hail potentially reaching the size of tennis balls.

So when do we expect potential severe weather?

We can expect two rounds tomorrow. The first round is expected in the morning hours between 3 am and noon. This could bring a small damaging wind/hail threat with it, but I expect severe weather chances to remain low with the first round.

Round two is the one to watch. There are still some questions regarding how things will evolve as morning storms will play a role in how the afternoon unfolds. Regardless, severe storms are possible during the late afternoon and evening hours across much of the state. The main threat will be large hail, up to tennis ball size, especially in South Central and Southwest Illinois. Damaging winds and perhaps a few tornadoes are also possible.

Takeaways

  • Two rounds of storms with on in the morning and one in the Afternoon/evening. The afternoon/evening brings the greatest severe threat.
  • Large hail up to tennis ball size is the main threat, but damaging winds and a couple of tornadoes are possible.
