Freezing Rain Possible Monday

Freezing rain is possible Monday into Monday night north and along I-70. Current model guidance suggests that areas north of and along I-70 in IL may see up to 1/10th of an inch of freezing rain. While an ice storm is not anticipated, even small amounts of ice could pose travel challenges during Monday and Monday night.

The temperature will play a crucial role in determining the extent of ice accumulation. Marginal temperatures for freezing rain mean that a difference of just 1 degree could determine whether it’s freezing rain or a cold rain.

The onset of freezing rain is expected around 5 AM Monday in Western Illinois, spreading across Central and Northern IL throughout the morning. Freezing rain is expected through Monday evening before transitioning to a cold rain as temperatures rise above freezing by Tuesday.

Wind is an additional concern, with gusts expected to reach 25-30 mph on Monday. While widespread power outages are not expected, some areas might experience power disruptions due to the combined effects of ice and wind.
