Halloween Snow?

Snow is possible during the morning hours of October 31, 2023. Hi-Res models continue to support a couple of rounds of snow over much of Central and Northern Illinois on Halloween. Not expecting much in the way of accumulation from this event, but given the potential for snow squalls with whiteout conditions this could be a high impact event for some.

Hi-res guidance suggests that the majority of the snow will stay north of I-74, where any light accumulations are likely to occur. Confidence is not high, but there has been enough consistency in the models to mention the potential for snow, especially if squalls develop over the area.

Round 1 will move through the area during the morning, starting in the western part of the state around 5-6 AM. This round will traverse Central Illinois and exit the area between noon and 1 PM.

Round two, could see higher impacts, will develop and move through the state in the afternoon and evening. This round is where light accumulations are likely to occur and has the greatest threat for whiteout conditions from snow squalls.

Overall, expect a few rounds of snow on Tuesday into Tuesday evening with the potential for light accumulations north of I-74. Be prepared for brief periods of whiteout conditions with the heavier snow bands.
